  • To build awareness in Michigan communities on issues directly or indirectly relating to human trafficking;

  • To collect, evaluate, and disseminate legal mechanisms to combat human trafficking.
The event is organized by Stonehouse Nursery, hosted by The Lemon Creek
Winery to benefit the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force.

Last year Planting Hope was able to raise over $7,000 for the Task Force. Funds were immediated put to use to train Michigan police officers and victim service providers to identify and work with victims of trafficking. The Task Force is doing a great job at spreading awareness and engaging in prevention efforts, but much more work is yet to be done. That is why Planting Hope is hoping to raise even more funds for them this year so that they can continue in heir efforts.

Last Year

Planting Hope 2012 marked the beginning of an annual community event to combat human trafficking in Michigan.

The day consisted of several elements, the first of course being the plant sale. Hundreds of beautiful planters were sold throughout the day, ranging in size, style, and plant type. Other vendors were also present selling herbs, jewelry, baked goods, and other plant products. In addition to these sales, Planting Hope t-shirts were sold, and we had a raffle with various baskets and items that were raffled off at the end of the day.

A highlight of the day was the speaker presentations. Two particulary powerful presentations were from Leslie King-Borrego and Malynda Jennings, who are both survivors of sex trafficking in Michigan. Leslie now runs Sacred Beginnings, a home for girls and women who have been trafficked, and Malynda works with the Hope Project, a safe house for victims of trafficking that is opening in Michigan. Jane White, the Director of the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, and Sara Karnes with the Hope Project also gave fantastic presentations to help everyone better understand the dynamics and needs of human trafficking prevention in Michigan.

In addition to the speakers, there was also an Awareness Tent consisting of representatives for human trafficking prevention organizations throughout Michigan. These included The Hope Project, Mission of Mercy, MSU International Justice Mission, The Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, The S.O.A.P. Project, Project Liberty, Sacred Beginnings, and Women at Risk International.

Overall, the day was a great success! Not only was $7,000 raised for the Task Force, but awareness about human trafficking grew in exponential dimensions. Many people stayed throughout the day, shopping around while purchasing wine and snacks, enjoying good company, and listening to the speakers and Task Force representatives. All who attened engaged in great discussions and had a fun and educational day at the Lemon Creek Winery. We look forward to what Planting Hope 2013 will bring as we join together to combat human trafficking!
